Seasonal Slow Living Rituals: Fall
And so we arrive at autumn... our favorite season of softer light, cooler air, and that gentle call to turn inward.
In my twenties, I lived for summer’s buzzing energy: patios and road trips, late nights chasing the next adventure. But as the years passed, I noticed something shifting. The endless pace no longer filled me up the way it once did. Instead, it was autumn that began to feel like home: the return of apples and new books, the comfort of sweaters, the quiet rhythm of shorter days.
I often think back to our first family dog, a sweet boxer girl named Ada. She adored the fall leaves. As a pup, she’d bound down the trails ahead of me, tossing leaves into the air with pure delight. Later, as her pace slowed, that joy never dimmed—her tail still wagged, her steps still quickened at the crunch of leaves underfoot.
Autumn with her taught me to slow down. To find uncomplicated happiness in the simple sound of leaves, whether on forest paths or city sidewalks. No matter her age, she found joy in fall.
And so do I.
Simple Rituals to Embrace Autumn
The beauty of slow living is that it doesn’t ask for a complete life overhaul. It asks for small, intentional pauses... little markers that bring us back to presence. Here are a few ways I’ve been softening into the season:
1. Walk Among Leaves
There’s nothing quite like the sound of leaves crunching underfoot. Let it be a meditation in motion. Put your phone away, feel the rhythm of your steps, and notice how the season shifts around you.
2. Breathe the Season
Autumn carries its own fragrance: honeycrisp air, a hint of woodsmoke, spice from the kitchen. Take a few minutes each day to step outside and fill your lungs. The breath is the simplest, most portable ritual we have.
3. Light With Intention
Candlelight changes a room instantly... softer, slower, more spacious. I like to choose scents that mirror the energy I need:
-
Our new seasonal FloodedWith Comfort for grounding at the end of a long day
-
FloodedWith Hope when I sit down to write or reflect
-
FloodedWith Light on Seattle's grey mornings, to remind me that brightness can live inside
4. Close With Gratitude
When you blow out the flame, pause. Let that small act feel like completion... a ritual that says, this moment mattered.
Closing Reflection
Autumn reminds us that slowing down is not a loss... it’s a gift. The softer light, the rustle of leaves, the warmth of a single flame… each invites us to notice what’s right here, right now.
When I think back to Ada bounding through fall leaves, I’m reminded that joy doesn’t come from how much we do, but how fully we live inside each moment.
So this season, give yourself permission to move a little slower. Kick up leaves. Breathe deeply. Light a candle with intention. And when the flame fades, carry that quiet presence with you into the rest of your day.
Here at FloodedWith, that’s what we’re crafting for you: small, sensory anchors to help make ordinary days feel like rituals of renewal.
